Welcome to Ripon Civic Society

We are dedicated to protecting and enhancing the historic buildings and environment of the cathedral city of Ripon on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and of the surrounding area.

Our aims include:

  • promoting heritage protection and conservation projects in the city and area
  • promoting the highest levels of architecture, planning and design
  • stimulating public awareness of the best qualities of Ripon and the surrounding area
acting as a leading voice in the development and prosperity of the city and the surrounding area.

The Society has around 200 members and is a strong voice in Ripon.  Why not join us?

Date for your calendar. On Tuesday 6th August we visit Selby and Carlton Towers (including a cream tea). Returns by 20th July please.

Our next open meeting will be on 5 September when we learn about Yorkshire place names. Meet in the Ripon Workhouse Museum Dining Hall for 7.30.

Heritage Open Day in Ripon is being planned for Sunday 15th September.

Ripon has its own Neighbourhood Plan. On a better than expected turnout of 21.69%, 2292 Ripon residents voted in the referendum on 14 February 2019 for the Ripon Neighbourhood Plan to help decide planning applications in the city. That's over five out of every six people voting supported the Plan. Harrogate Borough Council made the Plan in April.

Ripon Re-Viewed is an exciting new project to preserve and digitise 10,000 photographic images revealing over a century of life in the City of Ripon. Dating from the 1880s to the 1980s, these remarkable collections record the people, places, shops, schools, traditions, celebrations, events and the everyday life of our community.  Copies of the Ripon Re-Viewed 2019 Calendar are still available from the Society.
