RIPON CIVIC SOCIETY’S AWARDS 2016
The
restoration and adaptation of a former Victorian coach house in Ripon into a
new, modern, eco-friendly home has been named as the best project in Ripon
Civic Society’s Annual Awards.
The
Society’s Awards, presented at a ceremony at the city’s Spa Hotel on THURSDAY 6
OCTOBER, recognised good design, craftsmanship and environmental schemes from
the area around the city as well as within the city’s boundaries.
Highfield
Coach House was awarded the Society’s Helen Whitehead Salver for the Best
Project. It was also the winner of the Price
Flagon for Best Restoration, and of the Sustainability Award.
The Society’s Best New Building Award, with the Hazzard Cup, went to The
Orchards, a residential mental health care facility in Princess Close, which the
judges said was carefully-grouped and on a human scale, with varied elevations
and textures. The Orchards also won the Environment
Award, with the Younge Rosebowl, for its imaginative planting.
Other
Awards included The Taylor Plate for Best Shop Front, which was won by Jennifer
Holmes Hair and Beauty and G Clarke Barbers, two shops in Masham’s Park Street
that were formerly the Co-operative store.
The Craftsmanship Shield went to Ripon Cathedral for the restoration of
the exterior of the north east aisle, including spirited new gargoyles.
The
John Whitehead Award, which allows the Civic Society to recognise an
outstanding contribution to the area, was presented to Norton Conyers, in
recognition of the work carried out by Sir James and Lady Graham, undertaken over many years to take this
ancient, historic and fascinating house into the future in good heart.
David
Winpenny, Chairman of Ripon Civic Society, says, ‘This year’s Awards, which we
now hold every two years, show the diversity of new and restored buildings in
Ripon and the surrounding area, and the care that is taken in ensuring they
look their best. We are very pleased to
have been able to award so many projects, and we hope that the example of them
all will inspire others to do the same, so we can reward them in 2018, the
Civic Society’s 50th anniversary year.’

Civic Society’s Annual Awards.
The Society’s Awards, presented at a ceremony at the city’s Spa Hotel
on THURSDAY 2 OCTOBER recognised good design, craftsmanship and environmental
schemes from the area around the city as well as within the city’s
boundaries.
The Curzon, with North Square Apartments as part of the development, was
awarded the Society’s Helen Whitehead Salver for the Best Project. It was also joint winner, along with the

Village Hall, of the Price Flagon for Best Restoration.
The Society’s Environment Award, with the Younge Rosebowl, was awarded
to Littlethorpe Manor Gardens, developed over the last 14 years into a
wonderful garden with formal and informal areas, and varying vistas opening at
each turn.
Other Awards included The Taylor Plate for Best Shop Front, which was
won by Boroughbridge Hardware for its sensitive adaptation of a former public
house. The Craftsmanship Shield went to
St John’s Church in Sharow for its joinery work from the firm of Henki.
The John Whitehead Award, which allows the Civic Society to recognise
an outstanding contribution to the area, was presented to the Ripon Walled
Garden Project, in recognition of its work in the community, especially with
people with learning difficulties and people on probation.

David Winpenny, Chairman of Ripon Civic Society, says, ‘This year’s
Awards, our first for two years, show that great care is being taken to give
some of the historic but sometimes-tired buildings in Ripon and the surrounding
area a new lease of life by sensitive intervention, as at the Curzon cinema and
Sharow Church. We should like to see the
same care taken when new buildings are planned and executed; we still await a
really imaginative new scheme to which we can give a new building award. We congratulate all our winners and we hope
others will emulate the care, thought and craftsmanship that make them all
worthy recipients of our Awards.’
