CIVIC SOCIETY RECEIVES COMMENDATION AS IT WELCOMES OTHERS
27th October 2008
Ripon Civic Society was commended for its work during the recent Civic Societies Week when it welcomed the Yorkshire and Humberside Association of Civic Societies (YHACS) to the city on Saturday 25 October.
Before the meeting at Allhallowgate Methodist Church Hall, to which representatives of all the Civic Scotties in the county were invited, Ripon Civic Society representatives led a short walk round the historic core of the city. There was also a chance for them to be welcomed to the Workhouse Museum, before the business meeting in the afternoon.
The Peter Spawforth Awards for Achievement in Civic Societies week were presented at the meeting. The first prize went to Skipton Civic Society. Ripon Civic Society, which carried out a survey of the attitude of visitors and local people to the city, received a Commendation for its work. The survey formed the foundation of a recent successful Study Morning on the 2020 Vision for Ripon.
The meeting of YHACS was later addressed by architect Angela Brady, whose new television series on architecture in European Cities will be on Channel 4 in November. She spoke about sustainable building, including innovative construction methods and all types of recycling and carbon-neutral systems for buildings.
David Winpenny, Co-Chairman of Ripon Civic Society, says, We were delighted to welcome the YHACS delegates to Ripon and show them something of the city. It was good to compare notes with representatives of other Civic Societies and we were very pleased to be commended for our work.
