THE 19th-CENTURY RESTORATION OF RIPON CATHEDRAL SUBJECT OF SOCIETY’S TALK
24th January 2011
The major 19th-century restoration of Ripon Cathedral under the guidance of Sir Gilbert Scott will be the subject of the talk to Ripon Civic Society on Thursday 3 February, when the speaker will be the Society’s Chairman, David Winpenny.
The illustrated talk, called ‘A Very Difficult Work – Gilbert Scott and his restoration of Ripon Cathedral’, will look at the extensive repairs and reconstructions that Scott carried out on the building between 1862 and 1872. Scott’s was the most important and far-reaching of the cathedral’s 19th-century restorations, and it is due to his care that the cathedral has survived into the 21st century.
The meeting takes place at Allhallowgate Methodist Church Hall in Victoria Grove, Ripon, and starts at 7.30pm. Non-members are welcome, and pay £2.00 for the evening.
