Light will be thrown on the subject of spas of the North when writer, photographer and lecturer Mark Whyman is the speaker at Ripon Civic Society’s meeting on Thursday 7 April.
His talk, ‘The Secret of Life’ will uncover the secrets of taking the waters and show how they were said to cure almost any ailment. His talk will look at spas from Harrogate to Hartlepool by way of Hovingham and other Yorkshire spas, including Ripon’s neighbouring spa at Aldfield, as well as spas northwards from Buxton and Matlock up to Croft and Durham. He describes his talks as being ‘not for the queasy - but fun all the same’.
The meeting takes place at Allhallowgate Methodist Church Hall in Victoria Grove, Ripon, and starts at 7.30pm. Non-members are welcome, and pay £2.00 for the evening.

David Winpenny, Chairman of Ripon Civic Society, says, ‘Ripon’s attempts to be a spa at the beginning of the last century were not entirely successful. Mr Whyman’s talk may help us understand why, and suggest what makes a successful spa. It promises to be a fascinating evening.

The talk on Thursday 5 May has been changed from what was previously advertised. The speaker will now be Richard Willis, who will talk on ‘Wonders of the Waterways’.
